St Barbara’s Church turns into filmset for latest Colin Firth movie

St Barbara’s Church, home to PUMB’s annual concert series, is set to star in the new Matthew Vaughn thriller, the Secret Service, due for release in 2014. The church has been transformed for filming throughout the Autumn, and several A list celebrities have been spotted at the location, including none other than Colin Firth.

The comic-book film, which is set for release in the US in November next year, stars Firth as a James Bond-style secret agent who is tasked with turning his tearaway nephew, played by Taron Egerton, into a top spy.

X-Men director Vaughn is believed to have assembled an extensive number of A list celebrities for the film, including Samuel L Jackson, Michael Caine and talented British actress Sophie Cookson.

The movie has the backing of a number of major production companies, led by 20th Century Fox and Marv Films.

Transformation of the church started at the beginning of October, and was later flooded with a full production crew, security and extras.

The Garrison Church, now known as St Barbara’s after the Patron Saint of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, was built in 1901 to serve the military units stationed at Deepcut and Blackdown. A century later, the church still stands proudly and serves the local community well.

The Police Unity Memorial Band is honoured to host our annual concert series at St Barbara’s and will be back at the church on Sunday 15th December at 6pm with our Christmas concert, featuring some exciting new music, plus all your old festive favourites! Proms Concert a Huge Success!

Wow! What a night the band had last night. I think we are all still buzzing this morning after the success of last night’s Proms concert. Held at St Andrew’s Church in Frimley Green, the band were joined by a full and appreciative audience, with many familiar faces, and some much welcomed new faces.

Armed with a wonderfully selected programme of music, the band performed a mix of challenging new pieces including Rossini’s Thieving Magpie, along with some old favourites such as Fantasia on British Sea Songs, and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1.

With a full and rich sounding band, the audience received the music with cheer and triumph, whilst the band performed with smiles and conviction. Audience members were lucky enough to hear the clarinet concerto during Fantasia, performed by our principal clarinettist Louise Yeldon, with outstanding musicianship and her unmistakable perfection.

This year we have been supporting and fundraising for COPS – Care of Police Survivors – a well worthy cause who help rebuild the lives of families who have lost loved ones whilst serving in the line of duty. We heard from Denis Gunn, a trustee of the charity, who gave a very touching speech which reinforced exactly why the band chose to support COPS, and feel very honoured to be doing so.

We would like to say such a big thank you to everyone who came along yesterday; for supporting us and for supporting our charity COPS. We are looking forward to seeing you all again at our last concert of the year, which will be held on Sunday 15th December, 6pm, at our usual venue of St Barbara’s Church in Deepcut. Please do come down and join in all the Christmas fun!

Festival Fun at Fairlands

PUMB had the pleasure of appearing at the Fairlands Festival in Guildford earlier today. The successful event was attended by hundreds from in and around the local community, who enjoyed a variety of stalls, rambles, games and live music. Our very own clarinettist Charlie even took part in a welly throwing competition against others from the fire brigade and the St John’s Ambulance….needless to say we think he should stick to his day job! Thanks to everyone who came down to support us and the rest of the event. We had a great day!

PUMB at the Princes Gardens Bandstand, Aldershot

We had a great time at the Princes Gardens bandstand in Aldershot on Saturday 24th August 2013. Appearing here for the second year in a row, the band had a great day and enjoyed playing a diverse programme of music to yet another fantastic audience with eager ears. Big thanks to everyone who came to watch and support us – and we even had the privilege of one of our flautists bringing along the duty car, which made for a great photo with all our band members!

PUMB at the Eastbourne bandstand!

We were absolutely delighted to grace the stage at the Eastbourne bandstand on Sunday 7th July!

We performed two concerts to rapturous audiences and hundreds of appreciative passers by.

Our first ‘traditional afternoon’ concert was enjoyed by a hugely welcoming audience, and equally so by passers by, who regularly paused for a boogey and to appreciate a tune or two.

Our evening concert was once again well received by an enthusiastic audience, who clapped and sang along to our ‘last night of the proms’ themed pieces.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, including the sun, for a brilliant day! We hope to be back again next year.
